The first 24 hours after receiving a performance plan

A calm sequence for preserving the document, checking deadlines and avoiding an impulsive response.

Workplace notes related to the first 24 hours after receiving a performance plan

Read for dates before arguments

Mark when the plan begins, each review date and any requested acknowledgement. A signature may confirm receipt rather than agreement, but wording matters; ask before assuming. Keep the original document and note how and when it was delivered.

Build a clean chronology

List recent objectives, feedback meetings, relevant absences and changes to resources. Separate what you can verify from what you remember. Save messages and reports in accordance with workplace rules; do not remove confidential employer or customer information.

Resist the long rebuttal

An immediate line-by-line response often mixes strong evidence with emotional or minor points. First identify the standards being applied, examples offered and information missing. A shorter request for clarification may create a more useful record.

Check whether another deadline is hiding

A PIP itself is not the same as dismissal, but accompanying documents may carry consequences. Contact a German employment lawyer promptly if dismissal, an agreement to terminate, discrimination, protected leave or another legal deadline is involved.
